At the end of the 17th century, a row of cottages stood here, one of which can still be seen today on the corner opposite Church House. The ground floor was recently extensively redesigned to create a new bar, restaurant, reception and private dining suite. The Phoenix succeeded another famous hotel in Dereham, the King's Arms which stood overlooking the Market Place. It has been said that the Phoenix was so named as it rose like the mythical bird from the ashes of the King's Arms. Unfortunately the hotel does not have a lift.
