Description
Lonely Planet Review
Eschew the city centre for a slice of the country good life in this gorgeous Victorian-era lodge, easily reached in a leafy village five miles west of town. Filled with family warmth and unfeigned friendliness, it's a surprisingly wired-up modern place that still offers sleepy small-town respite.
The lodge was built in 1889, and hides its handsome bulk behind rusty iron gates and a ring of tall trees. Its imposing multi-gabled exterior suggests slicking down your hair and polishing your shoes before knocking, but inside it's a delightfully informal space shared with the young owners. Decorated with cosy modern taste, the rooms contain all the bonus gadgets you'd least expect in a Little Britain bed and breakfast: free broadband connection, DVD players, digital LCD TV and power showers. There's none of the awkward house-guest syndrome here; visitors are encouraged to kick back and play silly games in the cosy firelit drawing room, or in the garden or sheltered courtyard.
