| Overall - "In the foyer at the White Heather Hotel there is a mat which says ‘Welcome’. This is totally unnecessary; you can feel that you are welcome as soon as you are greeted by Gillian. So many hotels offer a formal, possibly austere welcome, not so the White Heather. The weary traveller is made at once to feel both comfortable and at home. Then, after you have settled in, you must take time to absorb the view. I stayed in a room at the front of the hotel, overlooking the little harbour and the picturesque ruins of Castle Moil. Away to the left the eye is lead down Loch Alsh to the distant Kintail Mountains, from between which the sun rises in mid-summer. Incidentally, I understand that the rooms at the rear of the building have equally panoramic views past the Skye bridge and out to the Atlantic. I consider the location of the hotel is enough to make the journey worthwhile, but there is so much more to do and see on Skye… This is where your hosts really do excel. Fortified by a substantial breakfast, freshly cooked by Craig, you are ready for anything. Gillian, fortunately, is on hand to share her considerable expertise in recommending local attractions, activities and advising on where to get the best photo opportunities. This advice is there for those who seek it, and is offered so that the visitor may get the maximum from their holiday, it is not forced in an inappropriately pushy manner. Don’t be put off going to Skye if you don’t fancy mountaineering or hiking. Whilst there are lots of strenuous activities to enjoy if you are the adventure holiday type, personally – I’m not. I was quite happy, then, to follow one or two of the recommended scenic drives around the island or the mainland – the scenery in the Highlands really is spectacular. You may be lucky enough to spot the wildlife without ever getting out of the car, if you choose not to. Gillian can even recommend a nice place or two for a light lunch (if you can manage it after all that breakfast!) Whatever you do, you can be sure that the same warm welcome awaits you on your return to the White Heather. And, if you decided at breakfast where you would like to dine in the evening, Gillian will have kindly booked you a table. So, for an action packed time, or a relaxing few days to unwind and recharge, I don’t hesitate to recommend the White Heather at Kyleakin." | |

| Overall - "We stayed at the White Heather in October 2004 and are returning in September 2006. We loved our stay there in a lovely room overlooking the castle moil and harbour. Breakfast was fantastic, a great choice and all freshly cooked. The hotel is bright and clean and welcoming. We are not hikers or walkers, but enjoyed travelling around the island visiting the castles and learning more about the Clans. The White Heather is an ideal hotel to use as a base, especially now that the bridge toll has gone. We cant wait to go back to Skye and we know that Gillian and Craig will make us welcome. I am sure that we return there again and again in the years to come." | |
